NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH STORIES
Neighborhood Watch Members
THANK YOU FOR A JOB WELL DONE, KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK IN KEEPING OUR
NEIGHBORHOODS SAFE AND SECURE!
These are prime examples of our Neighborhood Watch Program at work!
The first two are recent examples of neighbors stepping up and getting involved, they called the police when they saw a crime being committed which resulted in several arrests.
First
The first one was in the 29000 block of Elmgrove where a neighbor called the police when they saw a small black vehicle back into the driveway and three young males exit. Two of the males went into the backyard and the driver stayed out front with the vehicle. The neighbor saw the two males open the front door and start handing the driver some items. The driver then took the items from the males in the house and loaded them into the trunk. When the police arrived the young male tried telling them that he lived there but the caller said he did not. While they were speaking with him other officers on the scene observed some males exit the back door and start running through yards to evade the police. When the officers were conducting their investigation they observed a window open in the back of the house. All the subjects were caught and placed under arrest for home invasion. The subjects admitted to the police that the driver went to the front door and knocked, when nobody answered the other two climbed through an unlocked window in the back of the residence.
Second
The second one was in the 22000 block of Colony where a neighbor observed a subject exit the back yard area carrying a bag. The suspect stated he was just getting some belongings that were left there when he had moved out. The neighbor called the police anyway. Upon their arrival they interviewed the subject and the homeowner who was now on the scene. Apparently the subject had lived there but had been evicted back in April of 2008. The subject did have some belongings in some bins by the gate but he had no legal right to be in the house. The officers observed pry marks on the back door where the door had been forced open. The subject was then placed under arrest for home invasion.
Third
A thanks goes out to the neighbor in the 22000 block of Gaukler for interrupting a home invasion in progress. He observed a B/M climbing out of a back bedroom Window with a black garbage bag. After the neighbor yelled at the suspect he dropped the garbage bag and began to run. After a short chase he observed the suspect Get into a vehicle, he got a description of the vehicle along with the license plate number. He then called the police with the information which led to an identification and arrest of the suspect. Thanks again for the extra effort and getting all the pertinent information needed to apprehend the suspect.
Fourth
Here is an example of Neighbors looking out for their neighborhood. We had an anonymous caller provide the police department. With information regarding a lot of traffic coming to and from a residence in the 22000 block of Hanson Court. The caller suspected it to be drug activity. The police made a traffic stop on a vehicle leaving that residence and drugs were found in the vehicle. Therefore a search warrant was obtained and a search of the residence was conducted. The officers found money, drug paraphernalia, and some marijuana. While they were searching the residence the owners arrived and were arrested on the spot. Thank you for the great tip and helping to make our city a safer place to live.
Fifth
In the evening of 6-30-08 a resident on Daniels street called the police on two suspicious males dressed in all black ducking down behind the rear of a boat. Upon the officers arrival he observed the two males run N/B, the officer was able to locate and catch one of the males who was taken into custody. When the other officers arrived they found power drills and channel locks near the boat that was being tampered with. The wires were also cut during the attempt to steal the outboard motor. During a search of the suspects vehicle the officers located another possibly stolen outboard, the victim is unknown at this time. Good Job, the stealing of outboard motors is a real problem for our boat owners, I know they really appreciate your help.
Sixth
Another great example of The Neighborhood Watch Program.
On June 27 someone called the police department on a suspicious vehicle driving without their lights on in the area of Manhattan and Martin. The caller also stated they believed the suspicious vehicle in question may have been just stolen from a residence down the street. Upon the officers arrival they found the vehicle still driving in the area. The officers attempted a traffic stop and the suspect fled the scene refusing to stop. After a short chase a male was arrested for Flee & Elude and Possession of a Stolen Auto. The officers returned to the residence and confirmed the vehicle was stolen from their driveway.
Seventh
Meanwhile another resident called dispatch and was following a vehicle that was just involved in a hit and run accident in the area of Doremus and Jefferson. The officers made the scene and found the vehicle parked on the street with visible damage. They also observed a male in 7-11 matching the description given for the driver of the vehicle. The parked vehicle matched the one seen in the area of Manhattan following the recovered stolen auto and was confirmed stolen as well. The officers then went into 7-11 and arrested the male inside for possession of a Stolen Auto and Hit & run.
Good job on the residence for calling in on all the suspicious activity that night, resulting in two arrests, and the recovery of the two stolen autos. Once again it shows that your diligent effort to keep our city safe is working and very helpful to the police.
Eighth
A passerby driving down 12 mile on the way home observed a W/M park his truck in a way he felt was suspicious by a residence on Hughes. The suspect ran up to the residence and grab a BBQ grill, load it into the back of his pick-up truck and drive off. The passerby followed the suspect in his truck and wrote down the license plate. When he arrived at his residence he called the police. During the investigation they were able to verify the BBQ was stolen by the suspect and they are in the process of seeking prosecution. Thank you for your observation and quick thinking, without the license plate number and description of the suspect and his vehicle we would never have known who took the victims BBQ. Another prime example of people looking out for each other.
Thank you,
Keep up the good work!
